Does your church have a policy regarding how to handle congregants who show up smelling of alcohol or are inebriated or high at church? Thank you!
Our church does not have a policy for this kind of situation but our safety team has been trained on how to interact with someone who is exhibiting signs of alcohol or drug abuse. What we would do is greet the individual and persuade him/her to move to a less crowded area and start a conversation with them to ascertain if this is truly the problem. By getting close to someone you can possibly smell alcohol or even smell marijuana.
Our approach is to be helpful, find them assistance (possibly through one of our pastors and if they become disruptive, we would ask them to leave. If they agree to leave, you could invite them to come back to the church during business hours and meet with someone who could help or counsel them.
If they don’t leave, then you have the authority to tell them if they don’t leave, they will be considered as trespassing on your church property and local police will be called to handle the situation.
Usually that will take care of this but should they continue to resist, call 911 and ask the dispatcher to send a patrol car to your church and explain what is going on.
NOTE: This is not a policy of FSN but a process by which my particular church follows. Other churches may do different things depending on their own procedures.
Hope this helps you,
