If one is going to be armed they take on a responsibility to be capable with their firearm. We qualify 3-4 times a year per year as well as doing simulator training. We use a modified federal agency qualification course to perform that assessment and it is performed by qualified instructors or law enforcement officers. I’m curious how others handle this.
Again from personal experience with the security team at Foothills Bible Church, we require our security team members to qualify four times per year. We have been blessed with having an outdoor pistol range (that the team built) and use an NRA pistol instructor to conduct our training during Spring, Summer and Fall. The team is required to shoot a 90% proficiency from varying distances up to 20 yards away from the target. While a majority of the shooting sequences are from a standard shooting position, each year different tactics are added such as shooting while moving, speed clip reloading and shooting off angle at the target. Team members are also encouraged to visit the pistol range of their choice and practice during off duty hours and especially during the winter months when shooting training has been suspended.
